Three Chimneys is proud to welcome world record holder Red Giant for the 2010 season. The first son of Giant's Causeway to stand at Three Chimneys, Red Giant brings the most important components of sire success to the breeding shed.
He is a Grade 1 winner and millionaire, with two course records at 10 furlongs. He is a Graded stakes winner at both Saratoga and Santa Anita. He is by arguably the world's most significant stallion and he raced with distinction at two, three, and four, winning or placing at eight different tracks.
Most pertinent, he is the fastest horse in history at the true American Classic distance of a mile and a quarter, posting a new world record in 1:57.
Racing for John Fort's Peachtree Stable, Red Giant began his career in New York at two, placing in a maiden special weight on dirt at one mile. In his next start, also on dirt, he battled for the lead nearly every step of the way at Gulfstream, before being passed in deep stretch.
In his very next start, and first on turf, Red Giant exploded to a 5 1/2-length victory in a $54,000 maiden special weight in New York. That maiden-breaking win spoke volumes to his affinity for grass and dictated the path his career would follow.
Utilizing his exceptional tactical speed, Red Giant first took a Belmont allowance by two lengths, then nabbed the one-mile Restoration S. at Monmouth in a swift 1:35.82. He next tackled the $1,000,000 Virginia Derby-G2 at Colonial Downs, and drove to a thrilling victory in course-record time of 1:59.62.
The Virginia Derby is one of the leading targets for three-
year-old turf runners, and has been won by the likes of Champion and leading freshman sire Kitten's Joy, Champion English Channel, and Champion pro tem Gio Ponti. None of those ran as fast as Red Giant.
Red Giant ran twice more at three, running second in the Secretariat S.-G1 to Breeders' Cup Turf-G1 runner-up Shamdinan, and second in the Jamaica H.-G2 to millionaire Nobiz Like Shobiz.
After some time off, Red Giant returned to the races with a vengeance, winning all his remaining starts and burning his name into the record books.
Red Giant re-emerged at Saratoga winning the Fourstardave H.-G2 at 1 1/16 miles before setting the world on fire with his world record performance in the Clement Hirsch Memorial-G1.
Once again utilizing his stalking abilities, Red Giant sat patiently in third, before launching an explosive move on the far turn. Making up 10 lengths in a quarter of a mile, Red Giant ran the fourth quarter in a remarkable :22, en route to a new world record clocking of 1:57.16 for the 10 furlongs.
Reflecting on this performance, veteran writer Steve Haskin said admiringly, "You won't find many horses who combine courage, class, speed, versatility and consistency more than Red Giant. This is a horse who gives 100% every time and seems to relish a fight. There is nothing this horse can't do."
The historical perspective of the world record for 1 1/4 miles cannot be minimized. The Leading Sires Lists reveal that even in today's speed-oriented environment, 52% of the top five sires of the past five years have won at 1 1/4 miles.
Red Giant offers not only his exceptional race record, but his pedigree, replete with Classic winners and Champions.
Giant's Causeway was called the Iron Horse while racing,
with six G1 wins and four G1 seconds, including a memo-
rable renewal of the Breeders' Cup Classic-G1. At stud,
he's been a sensation, siring 73 stakes winners in six crops,
including a 2009 Breeders' Cup winner. His first son with
runners is Shamardal, one of the world's leading juvenile sires. Giant's Causeway is the Leading Sire of 2009.
Red Giant's dam, a stakes by Kingmambo, produced two stakes winners from her first two foals. Her dam is also a stakes mare/stakes producer. The next dam is one of the most illustrious matrons in pedigrees today, direct ances-
tress of five Champions, 25 stakes horses, and several major stallions.
Red Giant is an outcross within four generations, with his closest inbreeding 4x5 to Northern Dancer. A beautifully balanced 16.0 hands, he should suit a wide variety of mares.
